On October 24, 1983, Bailon was born to Freddie Bailón, an Ecuadorian, and Nilda Alicea, a Puerto Rican mother. She was raised in Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Bailon’s sister, Claudette, is older.
She went to the High School for Health Professions and Human Services and PS 110-The Monitor in Brooklyn, but she chose to focus on her musical pursuits over a future in medicine.
While Bailon was singing in a church choir at Madison Square Garden in October 1999, she was noticed by Latin pop artist Ricky Martin.
Bailon was one of the four singers selected by Martin, who asked for the group’s top four vocalists, to serve as backup vocalists for his Livin’ la Vida Loca Tour later that evening.
