Are Devon Toews Avalanche and Jonathan Toews Related? Brothers and Family Ties
On October 12, 2020, Toews was a restricted free agent with the Islanders because of salary cap restrictions.
As a result, Long Island traded him to the Colorado Avalanche for second-round draft picks in 2021 and 2022. On October 27, Toews agreed to a four-year, $16.4 million deal with the Avalanche. In his early season with the Avalanche, he primarily teamed up with Cale Makar and ranked first on the team in regular and postseason ice time per game.
On June 26, 2022, Devon Toews would win his first Stanley Cup with the Colorado Avalanche.
Toews ended his collegiate career on April 15, 2016, and signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the New York Islanders. Toews finished his studies at Quinnipiac in May 2017 despite finishing his time in college. Toews finished tenth among all AHL defensemen and tied all rookie defensemen in points during his first season with Bridgeport. With 40 assists, Toews tied Raymond Giroux for the most by a rookie defenseman.
After being sent back to the Sound Tigers, he participated in 30 games and scored 22 points before going on to have surgery after suffering a season-ending shoulder injury on December 30 while playing against the Binghamton Devils. Toews missed the rest of the 2017–18 campaign due to the severity of the injury. On July 16, 2018, the Islanders re-signed Toews to a two-year contract extension even though he wouldn’t play for the remainder of his deal.
Toews was transferred to the Sound Tigers after attending the Islanders’ training camp ahead of the 2018–19 campaign. On January 3, 2019, Toews played in his fifth NHL game and scored the game-winning goal in a 3-2 overtime victory over the Chicago Blackhawks to earn his first NHL point.
