Sharif was born on 25 December 1949 in an upper-middle-class family to Shamim Akhtar and Muhammad Sharif. He did his schooling from Saint Anthony High and graduation from Government College University, flourishing degrees in art and business, following which he completed LLB from Punjab University.
Sharif has been married to Kalsoom Nawaz since 1970 and has four children.
He entered politics after being irritated by former Prime Minister Bhutto’s nationalisation policies which hurt his steel business. Serving as a member of a provincial council in Punjab, subsequently becoming the finance minister; he was eventually elected as the Chief Minister.
