He began his television career as the weekend meteorologist at WXVT in Greenville, Mississippi. Prior to Florida, Heckard was the weekend and 4 p.m. meteorologist at WEHT in Evansville, Indiana from 2006-2013.
In Evansville, he covered all kinds of extreme weather, from blizzards and ice storms to major tornado outbreaks. He also did field coverage for the landfall of Hurricane Isaac in 2012.
Heckard had experiences of the hurricanes in Florida. He learned about the different seasons during hurricanes and this developed his knowledge in hurricane dealings. He mainly focused on forecasting the Hermine and Matthew. In addition to that, Heckard had also worked in the Fort Myers area covering two tornados in the area.
