James Thomas Anthony Valvano, or Jim Valvano, was Rocco and Angela’s naughty middle son and his brothers, Nick and Bob, had to endure his continuous speech and wild actions.

Pamela Levine, his high school girlfriend of 25 years, bore him three children Nicole, Jamie, and Lee Ann. Even though his demanding schedule took him apart from those he cared about the most, Jim’s profound dedication to family was the bedrock that enabled him to fulfill all his aspirations.

When Jim was 17, he got a white index card and jotted down all his career goals. The goals included playing basketball in high school and college, becoming an assistant basketball coach, and then a head coach. Jim also wrote about winning a game in Madison Square Garden and chopping down the nets after winning a National Championship.

Jim’s ability to identify his position in the world with such precision was indeed a blessing. With his firm confidence that he could influence his destiny, this simple index card would shape the next ten years of his life.

And at 36, he could state that he had fulfilled all the goals he had written down on his index card.

Valvano is also recognized for his inspiring and unforgettable statement while critically sick with cancer at the 1993 ESPY Awards. Valvano urged the crowd to cheer, think, and weep every day and unveiled the foundation of The V Foundation for Cancer Research. He delivered the lecture only about two months before dying of adenocarcinoma.

His tribute has added the Jimmy V Award to the ESPY Awards. Every year, the Jimmy V Classic college basketball tournament is hosted in his memory with the aid of cancer victims and survivors.
