Ellyse attended Beecroft Primary School and Pymble Ladies’ College while growing up in the Sydney suburb of Wahroonga. At Pymble, Ellyse led the school in sports, athletics, and cricket.
Perry participated in various sports, including tennis, athletics, touch football, golf, and cricket and soccer, during her school years.
Perry met future Australian teammate Alyssa Healy when she was nine years old, and the two played cricket together for the rest of their youth. She is most popularly known by the moniker “Pez,” which Healy gave her because of an ill-fitting junior-level outfit she wore.
She played cricket for New South Wales in an under-19 interstate competition shortly after turning 16 in January 2007. Ellyse scored 74 runs and grabbed three wickets in three matches.
