Jay has four siblings: Diana, Mary Kay, David, and Scott. Unlike his late father, who was a staunch Republican, Jay is a Democrat, and supported Barack Obama during the 2008 and 2012 presidential elections.
In October 2013, several outlets reported that Paterno was considering running as a Democrat in Pennsylvania’s 5th congressional district, which is based in State College. Instead, Paterno announced in February 2014 that he would be a candidate in the Democratic primary for Lieutenant governor of Pennsylvania in the 2014 election. Ultimately, he withdrew from the race in March 2014, citing the desire to avoid a legal battle over a challenge to his petition to achieve ballot access. Paterno has five children.
