Judy Sheindlin was born in Brooklyn, New York on October 21, 1942, to a Jewish family. She was the second child among her four siblings.
Sheindlin went to the James Madison High School in Brooklyn. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in government from the American University in Washington, D.C. In 1965, Judy Sheindlin earned her Juris Doctor degree from the New York Law School.
She also holds an honorary Doctor of Law degrees from the University at Albany and Elizabethtown College.
In 1964, she married Ronald Levy who later became a prosecutor in juvenile court. Together they are the parents of two children Adam and Jamie. The couple divorced in 1976.
She married Jerry Sheindlin who was an arbitrator on The People’s Court. She is the mother of three stepchildren with her second husband, Jerry Sheindlin.
