She plotted the murder with her older sister Shannon Garrison and her sister’s boyfriend Allen Goul.
The three teenagers planned and plotted the murder for weeks before executing their plan. They stabbed their mother Betty in her bedroom and strangled her until she died.
All three were arrested within hours after the dead body was found. They all were charged with the murder and Shannon and Allen pleaded guilty and were handed life in prison right away.
Melissa did not budge at first and it would take four juries to convict her of murder but the conviction was thrown by the supreme court as improper and inadmissible evidence was used in the trial.
As the authorities prepared to go for trial for the fifth time, Melissa confessed to the murder and pleaded guilty. She spent a year in prison before being released on parole.
