The two met when June and her sisters did a background vocal to one of his songs. The marriage produced one daughter – Rebecca Carlene Smith, popularly known as Carlene Carter. Their marriage lasted only for five years before it fell apart.
After her divorce, June Carter became the wife of Edwin Nix in 1957. Ed was a Nashville policeman and their marriage produced one child as well, a daughter – Rosanna, otherwise known as Rosie. In 1966, she belatedly received divorce papers from Ed.
