Because Deck knew the Longs’ grandson and had accompanied him to the Longs’ house in DeSoto, Missouri, Deck targeted James and Zelma Long, the victims in this case.
The original idea was to break into the Longs’ home while at church on a Sunday. Deck and Boliek traveled to DeSoto numerous times before the crime to canvass the neighborhood.
Deck aimed the gun at Mr. Long’s temple, slightly above his ear and below his brow, and fired twice.
Deck then put the gun to Mrs. Long’s head, once behind the ear and above it, and shot her twice. Both Longs perished as a result of the gunfire.
