Background and Career:
Khan was born on March 23, 1953, in Chicago, Illinois, United States into an eclectic and artistic family. Growing up as the eldest of five children, she was raised in the Hyde Park area, which she described as an “island in the middle of the madness” of Chicago’s South Side housing projects. Chaka’s parents, Charles Stevens and Sandra Coleman influenced her early appreciation for music.
Raised in a Catholic household, Chaka attended the elementary school of Saint Thomas the Apostle Church. Her love for music blossomed under her grandmother’s influence, leading her to form a girl group, the Crystalettes, at the young age of eleven. In the late 1960s, Chaka actively partook in civil rights rallies and joined the Black Panther Party, influenced by her father’s second wife, Connie, a staunch supporter of the movement.
In 1969, Chaka left the Black Panthers, dropped out of high school, and delved into the Chicago music scene. Her journey took a significant turn when she was asked to replace Baby Huey in Baby Huey & the Babysitters in 1970. Later, she joined Rufus in 1972, catching the attention of Ike Turner.
